Escalation
Mar. 9th, 2022 05:51 pmCrimea was Sudentenland. Ukraine is Czechoslovakia. Russia's already said they consider sanctions to be an act of war. The West is not going to be remembered as the ones who kept it from escalating, they will be remembered as Chamberlain is. This will be remembered as "peace in our time," as appeasement.
They're committing war crimes, they're shelling maternity hospitals, and they're shelling nuclear power plants. They're cutting off power to Chernobyl. Nuclear is already involved.
People have been asking what Russia's win condition is, because you have to have a puppet government or control or something like that. The problem with that is that it makes the mistake of thinking Putin is still rational, that he wants to achieve something other than just flex. Russia's win condition is shelling all of Ukraine into rubble. Russia's win condition is destroying the whole swath of it with bombs so nothing is left, including civilian infrastructure.
And then they'll go after Moldova, because the West has let them get away with it. And then they'll go after Georgia. And then, emboldened by the West's refusal to reign them in and China's refusal to take a side, they'll go after NATO and it will turn into a shooting war anyway, except that by then millions of people will be dead, millions more displaced, the pandemic run free among refugee camps killing still more, and three countries laid waste, a humanitarian crisis we could have stopped and chose not to in the name of not escalating things.
Meanwhile China will take the West's refusal to rein in Russia as free rein to go after Taiwan.
This is not moderation. This is not deescalation. This is standing by and allowing genocide, and we will be remembered for it.
