writerkitSo my question is: was this the culmination of Martin's habit of treating the tape recorders like they're pets, or is this another reminder that this is a trait of his, for some later payoff? Because we know that-- and the tape recorders in general-- has to be building to *something*.
And of course any time the tape recorders show up there's a question of motive. Is Elias sending the tape recorders or do they come from the Beholding itself? Elias knows they're trying to stop him, but he might well have acted to keep Martin aware of himself until Jon could get there *just* so he can gloat when they do get there, if he doesn't think they can stop him. Not all the tape recorders can be Elias, though, because we have definitely seen the tape recorders record things Elias doesn't know about. Which argues they're coming from the Eye directly. It might well view Martin as one of its playthings-- or else it knows he's important to Jon and acts to protect him for that reason.
Anyway, definite character development for Martin this week. And lots of self-worth and loneliness themes that ring very true.
