Yes, for better or worse, this sounds correct.

For things that you run at startup each time, it probably makes sense to put them in your .bashrc file. (Or perhaps .bash_profile? Or is .xsessionrc the right place? Honestly, it has been a while since I looked up what the modern approach is!)
