Magnus Archives: That Was Sort of Fun
Oct. 1st, 2020 09:52 pmThe is what we call a breather episode. I love Salesa. I mean, yes, we know he was a skeezy whatever before and he's extremely callous now, but there is no character in this show who is more aware of his own mythology-- like, he seems to have deliberately set out to be the creepy man of mystery we thought he was before this, and it leads to the most unbelievable amount of drama. And he's pulled it off, too; he *is* in fact what all the creepy shopkeepers from all the fables would be like if you actually met them in real life. (Also, one gets the sense that he's bored. Like, yes, he's pulled off the ultimate in being a prepper, but now he's just stuck in the house by himself with no one to be social with except creepy web woman who's there to cause trouble.)
How is it that the Web keeps control of Annabelle Cane in there and the Eye can't reach Jon? Or am I to understand the camera *only* blocks the Web, which gives Salesa limited protection from everything else too because the Eye is in the lead, but it can't keep everything out?
How much trouble has Jurgen Leitner inflicted on the world, though? So many of the modern players date back to Leitner's library in some way-- while the events that were set in motion began long before he started and the world probably would still have been doomed without his role, we've run into several of his former assistants who went on to cause trouble, and others who realized that the one book they found fit into a larger pattern only because of the label, and he really would have been better served by destroying the creepy books rather than storing them.
(I will also note that this week I did in fact read the trigger warnings! Of course, I didn't *need* them this week; this week was an episode of this show's version of light comedy.)
